Stefanutti Stocks Coastal constructed a 10-megalitre reinforced concrete reservoir for eThekwini Water and Sanitation in Umhlanga Rocks.
The contract included earthworks and sub-base preparation, reservoir construction, pipework, civil services and the construction of the inlet and outlet chambers.
Earthworks and sub base preparation
4 500m³ of material was cut to spoil and a further 1 500m³ was cut to stockpile, to be used for backfill against the structure once the reservoir was completed. The in-situ ground conditions were improved by placing imported G5 material in five layers, at a depth of 300mm per layer, with flexmesh installed between each layer.
Reservoir construction
The 6.4-metre-high reservoir comprises of 20 sloping wall bases, 16 floor slabs, 20 tapered walls and 36 columns and pedestals, all topped with a 250mm roof slab.
Pipework
The 220m long, 400mm diameter inlet and 250m long, 500mm diameter outlet pipelines and associated isolating and scour valves was constructed, followed by the installation of chambers and the associated pipework and valves.
Civil services
The division also constructed the infrastructure around the reservoir including access road and parking areas; a storm water system comprising of 450mm diameter concrete pipes; heavy duty uPVC pipes; subsoil drains and manholes.
